Key Features
Four Key Features
In these textbooks you will find four key features which are specifically designed to foster deeper understanding and critical thinking.
Essential Questions
The textbook is developed using the “Understanding by Design” framework which focuses on long term transfer goals (i.e, what we expect students to be able to do independently in a new situation after finishing the unit). Therefore, each unit starts with a set of essential questions (these are questions which are open-ended, do not have “yes” or “no” as answer, etc.).
Essential questions should be posted in the classroom at the beginning of the unit and discussed with the students that in this unit we will discover answers to these questions. Students should be able to answer these essential questions during or at the end of the unit.

Important Vocabulary
In the beginning of every unit there is an important vocabulary page. The lessons in the book cover these words more in detail. You can go over it briefly or use any of these words in any of the traditional style assessments (quiz) or in a game, after they have been explained in detail.

Brain Teasers
Brain Teaser and activity boxes provide critical thinking questions or activities related to the important understandings in the unit. These can also be good discussion questions/activities.

Review & Reflect Questions
This section is designed for students to gauge their understanding of the content. The question can be used as classwork or homework. Assessments should also include scenario based questions to bring out a deeper understanding of the material and concepts.
